Notre Dame Football Recruiting: David Abiara decommits from the Irish

The Irish won’t be signing the 4-Star pass rusher from Texas

As strange as college football recruiting is most of the time, this 2021 cycle is already full of head-scratchers. On Wednesday, 4-Star defensive end David Abiara decommitted from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

By most accounts, back in February, it was expected that Abiara was going to announce his commitment to Notre Dame. Instead to the surprise of many, the Texas native released a top 7 list on Twitter. About a month and a half later, Abiara then committed to Notre Dame over the Oklahoma Sooners, Alabama Crimson Tide, and others — and all seemed well.

It was not.

Abiara — while still committed to Notre Dame — was wavering quite a bit and seemed destined to flip to Oklahoma or even Texas at one point. Instead, he stayed in the fold with the Irish. Abiara then got into some trouble this fall that forced a change in his trajectory Notre Dame.

This decommitment brings Notre Dame’s 2021 total to 23 commits, but they continue to be the #8 team in the team composite rankings.
