Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Indiana Athlete JoJo Johnson commits to the Irish

That’s Jo cubed for you math nerds

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish added their 5th commitment of the 2021 class on Tuesday with the pledge of 3-Star Athlete JoJo Johnson from Merrillville, Indiana. Johnson was once committed to the Cincinnati Bearcats when Mike Mickens was on their staff, but he decommitted in October and found the offer from Mickens to play at Notre Dame too good to pass up.

The Irish continue to add athletes to this class, and Johnson certainly fits the mold. He could be used at wide receiver or cornerback once he gets to Notre Dame, but for right now he does fall into the cornerback position. We’ve seen Notre Dame have success with these types of players over the years, so it really doesn’t matter right now where he is classified.

Irish Illustrated’s Tim Prister offers this evaluation:

Johnson plays with very good-to-great, effortless speed. He could gain more quickness/speed as he adds strength to his frame. Used as a Wildcat in the Pirate offense, Johnson showed shiftiness and darting ability. He is a slot receiver/return man option if the Irish choose to employ him offensively and on special teams.

But it’s on the defensive side of the football where the Irish envision Johnson. Listed at 5-foot-11, he shows good length at those dimensions with a deceptively-long stride and a good reach. Where Johnson flashes most impressively is his ability to turn and run with receivers. Not only did he rarely allow separation from wideouts, but his turn-and-run speed (with those longer strides) is excellent. The flip of the hips comes easily. That makeup speed would come in handy defending slants.

This is Notre Dame’s 24th commitment in the 2021 class — a class that we still expect to be without DE David Abiara when it’s all said and done.

Notre Dame is still in good shape with elite running back Donovan Edwards (although definitely not anywhere close to a done deal) and they are working hard on Oklahoma Sooners DE commitment, Kelvin Gilliam.

Currently the class is ranked #8 according to the 247 Composite Team rankings. If the Irish were to add Edwards and Gilliam and lose Abiara, they would be at #6 (as the rankings stand right now).
