Notre Dame Football: Irish stay at #2 in both AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll

Just a few days away from total irrelevance

NCAA Football: Notre Dame at Pittsburgh Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to stay ranked at #2 in the country by both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll after sitting at home and eating cheeseburgers (also known as a BYE week).

While the Irish weren’t jumped by the Ohio State Buckeyes, the gap there got smaller as the gap between the Irish and the Alabama Crimson Tide widened.

And all of that is just fine — none of it matters anymore.

On Tuesday, the college football playoff committee will release their first set of rankings on ESPN in prime time. It will likely be a ridiculously drawn out show, but by the end of it, we will see what the playoff committee thinks of the Irish — which is the most important thing.

Before this past weekend, I firmly believed there was a really good chance that Notre Dame would be ranked #1 in the initial rankings due to the 8-0 record with a win over the Clemson Tigers. I thought that, and then Bama goes out and destroys the Kentucky Wildcats. That Bama/UK game wasn’t a huge deal, but it just provided another dominant performance over a lesser team for the Tide.

And these rankings won’t mean much either, but it’s what we have.

This week, Notre Dame will take on the North Carolina Tar Heels this week in a Black Friday afternoon matchup.
