Bagpipe Monday: Does it matter to Notre Dame who wins the National Championship?

Maybe? The poll(s) and pipes hash it out.

Welcome to another Bagpipe Monday on One Foot Down! Friends, the end of the college football season is going to happen tonight when the LSU Tigers take on the Clemson Tigers inside the Superdome in New Orleans for the National Championship. While you can count me in as one of the many that can’t wait to watch this incredible showdown — I know some fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish turn somewhat of a blind eye to all of this.

Bagpipe Monday Notre Dame @phillykelly

Outside of the fact that I’m just an enormous college football fan, this game still has a ton of relevance when it comes to the Irish. We all have hopes and aspirations for Notre Dame’s return to the college football playoff in 2020, so we need to pay attention — but does it matter who wins?

If Clemson wins, it certainly helps set up a huge showdown in South Bend in November the like of which we haven’t seen since the Florida State Seminoles in 1993 (if both teams make it there undefeated). If LSU wins, it kind of cracks the dynasties of both Clemson and the Alabama Crimson Tide — or at least lessens the chokehold they’ve had on the title over the past 4 years and 6 of the last 8.

Right now, LSU is a 5.5 point favorite in tonight’s matchup. Given how much more they have accomplished this season, and the way they have dominated teams, the line isn’t all that surprising. Still, Clemson just keeps on being elite in the face of criticism and loves playing the “disrespect” card, and Dabo is a master of the game (the whiny disrespect game).

It wouldn’t surprise me to see any outcome — either way, and then the winner can take home the truly coveted title of who has the REAL Death Valley.
