After the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost to Michigan, Ian Book got more than his fair share of shit from fans via social media. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) Irish fans took their frustration out on the Irish signal caller. This happens weekly, but the blowout loss to Michigan cranked the vitriol dose up a couple notches, and it became a storyline before and after the Virginia Tech game.

It’s why that picture of him running in the touchdown against the Hokies and making the “shhh” gesture was so important. The “noise” really does reach him (and the team).

So... maybe his latest Instagram post is in response to all of that. Ever since the moment the news about Phil Jurkovec transferring hit the wires (with a healthy buildup throughout the season) Ian Book has been thoroughly trashed by fans. Like it’s his fault Phil Jurkovec wasn’t the second coming of Joe Montana.

Maybe he’s talking to Phil here, or maybe he’s just talking to fans — it doesn’t really matter. He’s at Notre Dame as QB1, and I like the swagger he’s putting out there.

Ian Book wasn’t supposed to even be here. He was the in-between, according to a lot of people — even me a few years ago. This was supposed to have been Brandon Wimbush passing the torch to Phil Jurkovec. Instead, it’s Ian Book’s team — and really has been since early in 2018.

Recruiting stars be damned. Ian Book is the one that battled his way to the top, and will have another year to prove himself to the rest of ND Nation. For a program that built itself up by being the underdog, its fans sure do seem to forget that fact.

Or maybe this was just a geometry lesson.
