The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are down a player in the secondary now with the news that sophomore safety Derrik Allen will transfer to another school.

Allen was a 4-Star player when he came out of high school in Georgia, and many were excited about the possibilities he brought with him to the secondary. As a freshman in 2018, Allen’s larger size forced the question if he would ever play safety for Notre Dame — or would he become a linebacker?

Allen was right in the thick of it this spring, and he had a nice Blue-Gold Spring game for the Irish. While someone will quickly point out that 5-Star freshman Kyle Hamilton is balling out, and swallowing up reps — there is always a need for two safeties on the field. He had been one of those guys that many people kept asking about a possible transfer — and here we are.

Notre Dame’s thin lineup at safety is paper thin now. Perhaps this may see a more determined move for someone like Houston Griffith to play safety full-time moving forward, because after this year, both Jalen Elliott and Alohi Gilman will be gone.

There is no word yet as to where Allen will transfer to, but as a Georgia native, he had plenty of offers down south that would gladly take his talents.
