While most freshman lineman should almost always expect to be redshirted, the new 4 game rule from the NCAA allows a player to play in 4 games while keeping a year of eligibility. Carroll was a candidate to do that, but perhaps in an even larger role to help with his development at the collegiate level.
It’s a tough break for a kid just a few days into his freshman year, and we wish the best for his recovery.
