Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 3-Star wide receiver Xavier Watts commits to the Irish

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish added it’s second recruit to the 2020 class with the commitment of 3-Star wide receiver Xavier Watts. The 6’1” 185 pound speedster from Omaha, Nebraska announced his decision on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

Watts chose the Irish over a really nice offer list that included the in-state power Nebraska Cornhuskers, Wisconsin Badgers, Tennessee Volunteers, Michigan Wolverines and others.

This is an example of “star ratings be damned” as the Irish coaching staff absolutely loves Watts’s game, and coveted his commitment quite a bit. He brings a good amount of speed and athleticism to the position — which has certainly been the traits Notre Dame has been hitting on more and more lately. It should be noted that Watts is most likely the reason Notre Dame stopped recruiting 4-Star WR Michael Redding III.

When Irish Illustrated’s Tim Prister evaluated Watts, he had this to say about his game:

This truly is a dynamic athlete. The term “breakaway speed” can be overused on the recruiting trail. But time after time, Watts runs by the Bulldogs’ competition. Listed at 6-foot-1 – he’s probably closer to 6-foot-0 or a little less – Watts isn’t always the fastest off the snap of the football. But it only takes a couple of strides before he has defenders on their heels and in catch-up mode as he sprints by them. Over-play the deep ball and Watts will stick his foot in the ground and make a break to the sideline, creating separation because he has developed into such a dangerous deep-ball threat.

This is the 17th commitment for the Irish in this 2020 class and Watts is the 3rd wide receiver. With what we imagine to be about 3-4 spots remaining, the focus will primarily be at safety.

Seriously... it’s the first week of July and Notre Dame is basically 90% done with its recruiting class. Where they go from here is still very unclear, and I will discuss that further in a podcast this weekend.

FIST PUMP UP Y’ALL!
