Notre Dame Football Recruiting: 3-Star Cornerback Caleb Offord Commits to the Irish

One Mississippi, two... well, one.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish added another piece to its 2020 class on the 4th of July with the commitment of 3-Star cornerback, Caleb Offord. The 6’1” 175 pounder from Southhaven, Mississippi is the first player from the Magnolia State to commit to the Irish since legendary quarterback Jarious Jackson (Tupelo) did so with the 1996 class.

Offord chose the Irish over the Duke Blue Devils, Arkansas Razorbacks, Vanderbilt Commodores, Kentucky Wildcats, Purdue Boilermakers, and a handful of other schools (mostly in the south). He did not hold an offer from either of the in-state powers; the Mississippi St. Bulldogs or the Ole Miss Rebels.

It’s been a whirlwind of a recruitment for Offord and the Irish. Caleb was offered back on May 21, and following his visit to South Bend on June 21, Notre Dame almost instantly became the favorite to land the 3-Star CB.

His status as a 3-Star is unanimous across the board. While his length is ideal, his 40 time of 4.61 is not as such. He uses his size to play a physical brand of corner, and in doing so, he has a nice skillset for the position as a cover man. He could develop into a pure nickel at the college level.

This is Notre Dame’s 16th commitment for the 2020 class, and space is becoming very limited. We continue to press that 20 seems to be the number in this cycle with a possibility of 21. I believe that the Irish would still like to add a couple of safeties in this class (which Offord could develop into at the college level) and a couple of wide receivers. There is a buzz around the web that Notre Dame might be close on closing the deal on another recruit this month.
