Notre Dame Football: 2020 safety recruiting just got a whole lot harder for the Irish

Not sure what the plan is here.

Jerrin Thompson

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are in need of a couple of safeties to add to their 2020 recruiting class, but it’s been a tough road so far. Notre Dame’s safety board this cycle has already seen 10 of its 18 offers commit elsewhere — the most notable was also the most recent.

4-Star Lathan Ransom was as coveted as any recruit on Notre Dame’s board, but he committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes just last week. The Texas Longhorns were also in hot pursuit of Ransom, so... the Longhorns sent out a new offer to 4-Star Safety Jerrin Thompson.

Thompson represents the highest ranked safety left on Notre Dame’s board, and the Irish looked to be in good shape with the Lufkin, Texas product, and ready to battle the Arkansas Razorbacks, TCU Horned Frogs, LSU Tigers and Oklahoma State Cowboys for his pledge. The Irish are trying to get Thompson on campus for an official visit this fall — most likely for the game against the USC Trojans.

There are still a couple of 4-Star safeties on Notre Dame’s board, but as it almost always appears... this is going to be a tough position to fill for Notre Dame. They need two this cycle, and fighting Big State U for top prospects is always tricky (especially when those prospects get that late offer that they have been wanting all along).

The Irish currently have 17 commitments in their 2020 class, and the general target number seems to be 20. It may be a little quiet on the 2020 front for Notre Dame over the next couple of months, and we will have to wait and see how they react to Thompson possibly pulling the trigger for Texas before an official visit to South Bend.
