This Guy Plays Notre Dame Football: #45 Jonathon Jones, LB

Where Will Jones Fit in 2019?

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a roster full of players, and we want to talk about them all. One Foot Down’s player profile series will take a look at every single one of them, and hopefully we all learn a little bit more about these guys, and Notre Dame’s chances for the upcoming 2019 season.

Jonathon Jones, LB

Jonathon Jones is coming off a season where he was the backup to Mike LB, Te’Von Coney. It would seem that he would naturally replace the senior and step into the starting role with 2 years of eligibility remaining. However, it appears that he has fallen a bit in the depth chart with veteran Asmar Bilal and some of the younger players including Bo Bauer, Shayne Simon, and Drew White (White Drew). As widely known, the linebacker position is in flux, so it is not totally clear where/how Jones will fit into the rotation until mid camp.

Regardless, Jones should see action in nearly all of the games this season, as he has been a staple special teams player over the course of the last two seasons.

Taylor Swift (+ JLO). I mean. What a collaboration.

2019 Outlook

This is one that I really have a difficult time predicting. The linebacker core is general is completely in flux, and will take the summer/fall camp to truly shake out. Jones will absolutely have the opportunity to compete and I think he will either step up, or be relegated to just a special teams player for the year. I don’t see a scenario where the coaches want to keep him in a backup roll all season, especially when a lot of the younger guys have been making strides. No matter what, Jones will be on the field the fall, but in what capacity remains a bit of a mystery.
