In just a few weeks, the third anniversary of my takeover as the Site Manger here at One Foot Down will — well, go down. In that spirit, I’m here fishing for feedback and a little bit of a report card. This isn’t “my site” because it’s your site. You the reader, commenter, conspiracy theorist, grammar cop, football junkie, and most of all — fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
So... how have we been doing?
Our biggest priority here is covering the Irish football program. In that respect, we are quite proud of what we have accomplished during the past year. Whether it’s game week coverage (of which you can find the entire season’s stream right here), recruiting, opinion, general tomfoolery — or whatever, we cover a lot of ground here.
2018 saw the second full year of coverage inside the press box, and we are hoping to add a second person to the team inside the box on gamedays. I’m not sure exactly what that means for you, but we are very eager to hear any suggestions you might have. We also added Mike Miller as our gameday photographer at Notre Dame in 2018. Mike will be back again in 2019, and we hope to send him to a few away games as well.
It was another tough year for the men’s team, but we tried to cover it as best we could with dignity, grace, and a whole lot of gin. Outside of the South Bend Tribune, I fully believe OFD provided some of the best coverage of Irish basketball that you could find on the web.
It was another awesome year for the women, and we hope our coverage of Muffet’s squad was to your liking.
I am starting to piece together some changes for both Men’s and Women’s coverage for the 2019-2020 season, and hopefully we can make OFD an even better place to follow the Irish on the hardwood.
We finally got a full season of hockey under our belts, and I couldn’t be prouder of the coverage we provided. Another awesome run by Jeff Jackson’s squad helped us out quite a bit, but we should probably expect that moving forward. I will be looking to expand hockey coverage even more this year.
We tried to cover men’s lacrosse this year, but the guy writing for us pretty much took off without any notice. Women’s lacrosse, however, was covered quite well. We were also able to document Mik Aoki’s last year as the baseball coach — and hopefully we will have happier stories next season.
OTHER FUTURE ADDITIONS
There may be some changes around August, and if all goes well, we may be able to start providing more coverage of the soccer teams, fencing, and well... whatever else we can get our hands on. This would be in addition to our normal coverage of everything else above and will not interfere in anything else that we do. I can’t say any more than that, but keep your fingers crossed (or better yet... light a candle).
We have completely changed the way we do podcasts on OFD. Wes and Martin took a retirement lap after the 2018 football season, and then shut it down. Jude, Brad, and I kickstarted the thing back into gear, and have provided an episode each week since February. I have also added quite a few extra episodes (OFF THE RAILS) along the way.
The goal right now for fall is for 2 OFD Podcasts a week (preview and review) and at least 1 OTR episode a week.
So, now that I tooted our horn a little bit, I nervously ask you again — how are we doing? Are we doing a good job? Is there something more you would like to see? Is there something you wish would just crawl into a hole and stay away forever? I’m going to put up a generic poll, but if there is something specific- please let us know in the comments below. We will certainly try to do our best.
How are we doing?
