Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Irish get commitment from Chris Tyree, the nation’s top all-purpose running back

This is the big commitment that was never a secret.

The Notre Dame Fighting won a huge recruiting battle today when 4-Star running back, Chris Tyree announced his commitment to play under the Golden Dome. Tyree is a burner on the field and is widely considered to be the #1 all-purpose running back in the 2020 class.

The 5’9” 178 pounder from Chester, Virginia chose the Irish over a long list of offers from across the country that included the Oklahoma Sooners, Alabama Crimson Tide, Penn State Nittany Lions, and many more.

He was rated as a 5-Star recruit just a few short weeks ago, but the recruiting services have adjusted things here and there, so he’s now a ridiculously high 4-Star player. His #1 ranking has never changed, but his overall ranking has dropped slightly over the last few years. Back in August of 2017, Tyree was the #4 player in the entire class, and now he is the 29th. With an entire senior season still to go and the all-star games, it’s not hard to imagine him picking that 5-Star back up before national signing day.

I’m cool with that.

He’s the 17th highest rated recruit for the Irish in the internet recruiting age (right between Stephon Tuitt and Kyle Rudolph). He’s also the 2nd highest ranked running back recruit — one spot behind James Aldridge.

Tyree was a “must get” for the Irish in this class, and the role of new running backs coach Lance Taylor cannot be understated. Taylor and Chip Long were the ones that dialed it up even more after Chris’s official visit to Oklahoma that almost resulted in a commitment to the Sooners.

Here is 247’s evaluation of Tyree:

Will always be questions about his frame and work-load capability. Blazing speed with verified 4.38 seconds in 40. Burst is a plus. Vertical of 38.2 inches. Stop-start ability is impressive. Wildly productive. Good vision and patience in the hole. Excellent body control. Accelerates to full speed within three steps. Can run inside or outside. Tough to arm tackle. Dangerous pass catcher who can line up in slot. Adding strength is a must. Yet to show he can be good at pass protect. Major contributor at elite college program. Middle round NFL draft pick.

Tyree is the 11th commitment in the 2020 class for the Irish and the highest rated player overall. The Irish are building one of the best classes in the country right now — and that includes a 5-Star long snapper (leave your hate at the door).
