As it is with recruiting, we are all focused on the future and what may come of this 2020 class. Is this the year that Notre Dame makes a solid push back into the top 5?
With plenty of talent still on the table for the Irish and a possible 10 spots remaining... this class could be one of Brian Kelly’s best. The class has a point total of 189.01 points right now, but some key commitments would increase that number dramatically.
Last week I listed 10 of the best prospects left on Notre Dame’s board. Tosh Baker gave his commitment shortly thereafter, leaving 9 from that list (sweet math). What if the Irish were able to gain 5 more from that list?
By selecting a reasonable next five, we can plug them into the 247 Class Calculator to get a good idea where the Irish might be sitting in a few months time.
Plug in:
- Braiden McGregor 4-Star DE
- Chris Tyree 4-Star RB
- Michael Redding III 4-Star WR
- Michael Carmody 4-Star OL
- Clark Phillips III 4-Star CB
Those five would bring Notre Dame’s class total to 258.35 with 15 commitments — one of which is a 2-Star Long Snapper (5-Star Kohls y’all). Notre Dame’s class total in 2019 that ranked 15th nationally was 258.56.
I won’t do the plug-n-play for another 5 just to show where they could end up by the end of the cycle (because that’s truly a big guess) but that 258.35 would put them at #2 nationally right now behind only the Clemson Tigers (who have four 5-Stars). The next two are the LSU Tigers with 256.76 and the Alabama Crimson Tide with 255.39. Bama and LSU have 16 and 14 commitments respectively, so it’s a nice comparison.
The Irish are loading up on top talent right now — 5-Stars be damned.
The whole point of this wasn’t to say or predict the next handful of commitments for the Irish. It was an easy way to show that Notre Dame is on the right path in this cycle, and with some very possible commitments, there is a path to crack into that top 5 at the end of this recruiting cycle.
