The Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell to the Pittsburgh Panthers 56 to 53 on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped a 13-game losing streak for Pitt, and dropped Notre Dame to 13-18 at the end of an abysmal regular season.
Nate Laszewski had 23 points to lead the Irish, and Dane Goodwin added 10. John Mooney registered only four points on a 1-11 outing, but the Irish big man and bright spot of the year did pull down 13 rebounds. Points were hard to come by in this one, and not many other guys registered too many important stats.
The loss is Notre Dame’s seventh in a row. A team that once showed promise with a close loss to Virginia ends the regular season without a whole lot of great things to build on. The ACC Tournament is up next, which I expect coach Mike Brey to use as an example and a teaching opportunity for his young squad.
For now, however, the merciless regular season is over.
