Happy St. Patrick’s Day! There is no holiday that more associates itself with a single color than March 17th. Similarly, perhaps there is no college football program that associates itself with an unofficial color than the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The green jerseys are a part of Irish lore, but they also have a dark side of failure attached to them as well.
Brian Kelly has seemed to have tossed all negative connotations implied with the green jerseys in the trash during his 9 seasons as the Fighting Irish head coach. When Kelly took over in 2010, Notre Dame was just 1-5 in the green jerseys since 1995. The lone win came against the Army Black Knights on senior day in 2006. Ironically enough, Kelly got off to a 1-0 start in the green jerseys in his first year against Army in a game at Yankee Stadium (which would later be incorporated into the Shamrock Series).
Brian Kelly is 6-1 when the Irish wear the green jersey (whether styled as a home or away uniform). The lone loss came in 2011 against the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
Whenever the hint of a rumor of the green jerseys being used hits the internet — fans lose their mind. Many believe that Notre Dame is cursed in the green jersey, and they offer proof with a prophecy written on an actual unicorn horn that they were given by a pack of mermaids off the coast of Atlantis.
You can thank Bob Davie and Ty Willingham for that little mess.
At any rate, I think it’s safe to say that the “curse” is long gone, and we can thank Brian Kelly for that. His “green jersey games” have been well scheduled in advance, and have never been used as an “inspirational” ploy designed to cast a spell upon the team and draw more power from the ghosts of Notre Dame.
I suppose that’s some type of win.
