The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are not expected to retain offensive coordinator Chip Long for the 2020 season. Rumors had been swirling about Long’s departure, but Tim Prister from Irish Illustrated has reported that sources have told him Chip Long will no longer be the offensive coordinator for Notre Dame.
There is a widely discussed view that the Irish will promote from within — either Tommy Rees or Lance Taylor, but I would caution any assumption at this point.
I don’t believe this is something that “just happened” between Long and Notre Dame, as the relationship never felt all that strong with Brian Kelly. Still, it’s never easy for a coach or an administration to make a big change like this.
With the early period for national signing day just a week away, there is the potential for some changes in the recruiting class — although there isn’t any clear movement at the moment.
Notre Dame averaged over 37 points per game this season, but performances against Clemson, Georgia, and Michigan have been far below that standard/average.
Tim Prister also reported that Chip Long will not coach in the Camping World Bowl against the Iowa State Cyclones on December 28th.
