Hockey returned to the Compton Family Ice Arena Friday as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish took on the Ohio State University Buckeyes. The matchup put two of the most elite teams in the college game to the test, but it was the Irish who got the W in overtime. Fans saw young talent shine and watched conference rivalry play out at its best.
First Period
The Buckeyes went after it on the offense from the start and claimed 8 shots on goal to surpass Notre Dame’s 5. Fans saw penalty after penalty but not one power play goal for either squad. The two team’s elite penalty kills and standout goaltenders kept an even struggle until Ohio State’s Tanner Laczynski ended the period in the Buckeyes’ favor with the first goal of the game. A game misconduct for Notre Dame’s Jesse Lansdell for contact to the head brought the Buckeyes into the second period with the upper hand.
Second Period
Extra Irish skater Solag Bakich had been on the ice to step in for Lansdell and put his team on the board with the first goal of his college career. The struggle continued as the tie remained, but the Irish seemed to find their flow.

Third Period
The two teams carried the sense of urgency into the third as they worked to break the tie. It was Ohio State’s Carson Meyer who found the back of the net to give his team the 2-1 lead. However, Notre Dame’s fiery freshman Trevor Janicke shut the Buckeyes down to tie it up again soon after.
