COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 14 New Mexico at Notre Dame

Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans are slightly more confident in the direction of their favorite team’s program than they were in the immediate aftermath of the Michigan debacle, a new SB Nation poll released Tuesday found.

The confidence of self-identified Irish fans is 53.9 percent after the 21-20 escape last Saturday versus the Virginia Tech Hokies, up 9.2 percent from the prior week’s FanPulse survey. (You can sign up here to add your opinion starting Saturday evening.*)

Notre Dame supporters collectively made one notable change to their Top 25 list: They elevated the Irish to No. 15 and dropped the Michigan Wolverines one spot to No. 16. That’s an action borne out of either delusion or spite.

In the national poll — which encompasses our fans, supporters of 49 other Power 5 teams and those who root for Group of 5 squads — the Irish improved one spot from No. 15 to No. 14. (Michigan dropped in the national poll by one spot.)

This week, the poll asked a separate question to Irish fans about their confidence in the Notre Dame men’s basketball program. It’s sort of an odd question, since it assumes survey respondents — who signed up to rank football teams — also have an opinion about another sport at the same university.

For what it’s worth, 62.5 percent of Irish football fans think the Notre Dame men’s basketball team is headed in the right direction.

Returning to football, fanbases of the Irish’s 2019 opponents continue to weigh in on confidence that their favorite team is going the right way.
