The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got their third win in a row inside Purcell Pavilion with a 74-64 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd. After a tough loss to North Carolina to start the season, the Irish have looked much more cohesive — albeit against lesser competition.
John Mooney was the big story on Friday night. The senior got another double double with 28 points and 16 rebounds on the night. Whenever the Irish started to slip and relinquish the lead, Mooney was there to provide a spark — whether it was a steal (2 on the night) or just some good old fashioned hustle. The only knock on Mooney’s game against Marshall was that he was just 7-12 from the free throw line.
Mooney wasn’t the only senior to help out on the night as T.J. Gibbs scored 15 points on the night — mostly in the first half. Dane Goodwin scored 11 and showed a lot of toughness defensively and on the glass with 7 rebounds.
It was a good win for the Irish. It got a little sloppy at times, but every time the Herd started to make a real comeback, Notre Dame found answer after answer on both ends of the court.
The Irish will continue their out of conference schedule on Monday when Presbyterian come to South Bend.
