The Michigan Wolverines dominated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 45-14, at Michigan Stadium Saturday.
IT WAS OVER WHEN...
Shea Patterson found Mike Sainristil running free 17 yards from the line of scrimmage, with Jalen Elliott at least five yards away from him. Elliott would eventually push the receiver out of bounds at the 16-yard line after a gain of 34. But, the Wolverines, up 17 points and in the red zone again with 12 minutes remaining in the final quarter, had hit 100 percent win probability.
SUCCESS RATE
Ian Book was 8-for-25 for 73 yards, one touchdown and zero turnovers. His success rate was 19.2 percent, the lowest of any Notre Dame quarterback in a single Brian Kelly-era game (minimum 10 attempts). Brandon Wimbush had a 12.5 percent success rate in the Citrus Bowl against LSU, but attempted just eight passes before Book replaced him.
What is success rate?
“The goal of success rate is to create an on-base percentage-style efficiency measure,” ESPN’s Bill Connelly wrote last year. “Depending on a given down and distance, each play is deemed successful or non-successful:
- First downs: gaining at least 50 percent of necessary yardage (usually 5 yards) is successful.
- Second downs: gaining at least 70 percent of necessary yardage is successful.
- Third or fourth downs: gaining at least 100 percent of necessary yardage is successful.”
For quarterback performances, Connelly told me to consider only downs where a pass was attempted or a sack was recorded. (He’d also suggest adjusting for opponent, which I haven’t done.)
Book’s success rate in 2019 so far is 39.8 percent.
Notre Dame ran 60 offensive plays, of which 15 were successful by this metric. That 25 percent success rate is third-lowest in the Brian Kelly era (123 games), below the 2016 hurricane game against the N.C. State Wolfpack (23.4 percent) and the 2017 game against the Georgia Bulldogs (22.1 percent).
BREAKING TACKLES/MISSED TACKLES
I charted just one tackle that Michigan missed — and it’s a debatable one.
Midway through the third quarter, Book scrambled to avoid Wolverines pressure and was about to be met by linebacker Jordan Glasgow at the line of scrimmage. Book gave Glasgow a little shake of the shoulders and the graduate student fell down on the wet turf as the senior quarterback ran for nine additional yards.
YARDS AFTER CONTACT
As I used to chart games for College Football Film Room, I use their guideline to calculate based on where the ball was when contact was made. It has to be substantial contact, when the runner is either slowed or in danger of being tackled.

BOOK VERSUS HIS PREDECESSORS
The senior has now taken 1,247 snaps under center for the Irish. Here’s how his statistics match up to six of his predecessors who took that many snaps for Notre Dame.
