The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are returning from their second bye week of the season and Brian Kelly returned to the airwaves Thursday for the latest segment of the Brian Kelly Show. The coach explained some of the keys to the team’s victory against the University of Southern California Trojans as well as some key considerations as the Irish prepare to take on the University of Michigan Wolverines. The Irish mentality has become a running element of these radio segments, and this week, we hear more of the diligence and awareness of a legacy that constructs this distinct mindset. Kelly admitted the Wolverines’ offense has developed over the course of the season, but the Irish have prepared for Michigan’s meticulous weekly adjustments.

Tony Jones Jr.

Kelly praised this Irish running back’s attention to detail and physicality, particularly in the team’s victory over the Trojans two weeks ago. Kelly said, “He does all the little things really well for us.” Tony Jones Jr. claimed a career high 176 rushing yards against the Trojans to contribute to the team’s season high 308 rushing yards in that game.

Jonathan Doerer

The loss of Justin Yoon left a tremendous gap to fill. However, Doerer’s consistency in particular marks movement in the right direction for Notre Dame special teams. Kelly said, “He’s gotten into a great routine.”Notre Dame’s kicker made an impact all his own in the team’s most recent game with three points to lock in an Irish win.

Chase Claypool

Coach Kelly gave a special teams shout out and highlighted Chase Claypool’s flexibility. On Claypool’s dedication to his special teams responsibilities, Kelly said, “He takes it really serious… It would be easy for him to tap out.”
