Notre Dame Football: Brian Kelly - “You Guys Are Haters”

Brian Kelly, the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, is no stranger to coachspeak, and every season the lexicon seems to get new additions and more emphasis is placed on some words and phrases than others. So, his press conferences are more of an exercise in digging through the “talk” and finding some tangible news or insight.

It’s not that Kelly is really coy about it all, it’s just that his lingo rolls out of his mouth with a pace and voice that clouds a lot of what he is really saying

In his weekly Tuesday press conference, Brian Kelly stated how they evaluate games:

“We have an exercise that we use within our program, offense, defense, special teams, support staff, everything that we do, and we call it well-better-learned. What have we done well? What can we do better? And what have we learned?”

Brian Kelly is in his 9th year at Notre Dame and this is the first time I’ve heard of this. That’s nothing new as the christening of Brian kelly 2.0 and Brian Kelly 3.0 are really inaccurate. Brian Kelly continually changes how he operates, and perhaps that’s why he has been at Notre Dame so long — even through some really rough times.

There’s a lot of good stuff in this week’s presser once you get past all that coachspeak as Michael Bertsch gets some PT, Shayne Simon’s position, Jalen Elliott’s rise, Alize Mack, and Kelly berates the media for being “haters.”

“So let’s give John Shannon some love. He runs down there and covers kicks. How’s that? Long snapper love for anybody? Not really? You guys are haters.”
