Notre Dame Football: The First Day Of Fall Camp Feels Like A Success

Time to get your mind right

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish finally started the 2018 season with their first team practice on Friday. With the media in attendance, we are all able to get a look at this new team — even if they are just in shorts and helmets.

By and large, most observers were impressed with what they saw. Much like the spring, fall camp has a tendency to put a spotlight on a player (or two) that seem to disappear once the season gets underway. So... take some of what you hear, see, and read over the next few weeks with a grain of salt.

A day after head coach Brian Kelly gave Brandon Wimbush an “A+” grade for what he had accomplished over the offseason, most accounts noted that Wimbush had a good day — biut not perfect. Like anyone is supposed to be perfect on the first day. So... he had a good day.

We got our first glimspe at the new freshmen and that’s always exciting. Early enrollee, Bo Bauer, is in the mix at ILB as a rotator with Te’von Coney (who can relieve Drue Tranquill as well). Kevin Austin already looks pretty good out there, everyone is placing bets on when Houston Griffith becomes a starter at safety, and now we know Phil Jurkovec has a funny release.

Miles Boykin had a good day, and despite having THE BEST OFFSEASON OF HIS LIFE... Dexter Williams didn’t see many reps (oh, BK had some reasons).

Put it all together (plus a bit more) and it looks like Notre Dame had a good day. A good day is a success. I don’t want to get cheesy or anything, but you can snowball small successes in the preseason, and you can turn that into actual momentum in the forst game of the season — which is rare.

I was please, and so was Brian Kelly. YAY US!
