Notre Dame Football: DB Shaun Crawford Suffers ACL Tear

More bad news for the senior defensive back.

NCAA Football: Notre Dame at Boston College Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

It’s being reported on Irish Sports Daily that Shawn Crawford suffered an ACL tear during practice on Tuesday. The tear is on his left leg while the achilles injury he had was on his right leg.

As of right now, no one has made any official announcement of the injury.

Crawford was perhaps the best playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and played an important role as the nickel back. Notre Dame has depth in the defensive backfield, but a lot of that depth is young.

Will the Irish slide Nick Coleman up to play nickel and bring in Houston Griffith to play safety in those situations? Will one of the freshmen in D.J. Brown or Tariq Bracy earn a place at the position? Both Brown and Bracy were training there during fall camp.

Regardless of the who, this is certainly a blow to the Irish defense and to the team as they prepare to take on the Michigan Wolverines to start the season.

On a personal note, I feel absolutely terrible for Shaun. This could be the 3rd year in the past 4 that he would have suffered a season ending injury. He’s a hard-working kid, and has just had the worst luck in terms of his body’s wear and tear. Our hearts here at OFD go out to him and his family.
