Bagpipe Monday: How Important Is It For Notre Dame To Beat Michigan?

The weekly poll and pipes is ready to go to war — no matter the importance.

Welcome to BAGPIPE MONDAY on One Foot Down! Friends, it’s finally game week for the 2018 season, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a HUGE task in store for them with the Michigan Wolverines. As I write this, the #12 ranked Irish are 1.5 point underdogs at home to the #14 ranked Skunkbears.

There’s a question that was asked before Notre Dame’s game last year versus the Georgia Bulldogs that applies to the season-opener this year... How important is it for Notre Dame to get a win here?

I realize this is somewhat of a silly question for die-hard fans. In the world of college football, every win is important, just as every loss is even more important. We say all that, but we just don’t see multiple teams go undefeated each year, and with the playoffs, it’s not as ridiculously dire as losing one game in, say, 1993.

Of course, we have only spoken to the rankings part of it all. What does a win or loss in the beginning of the season do for a team’s motivation and confidence? Does the bubble completely burst with a loss? After all, there is SO much lead-up to the first game of the season — especially when it’s a game of this magnitude.

There’s just so much that goes into a game like this, that I’m not sure if I am able to answer the question. I mean, if Notre Dame beats Michigan, but loses to (for example) Sanford, Virginia Tech, and USC, does that week one win still mean much? On the other hand, if Notre Dame were to lose to Michigan, but run the rest of the table, how important would that game against the Wolverines be?

Another way to look at it comes down to two words: “right now.” The narrative in college football changes so much week to week, that quite simply... right now is the most important game there possibly is and ever will be, amen.

So, I guess it all depends on how you look at this game and the upcoming season — and how Notre Dame fits within the entire landscape of college football. Or, you could say and believe: IT’S MICHIGAN AND THEY CAN GO DIRECTLY TO HELL — TO HELL!

There’s your importance. We hate them, and can bury them early.

I’m in.
