We are a week away from the start of the college football season, and for fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, it doesn’t get much bigger than opening the season against the Michigan Wolverines, in South Bend, in prime time, with ESPN’s College Gameday in attendance.
Part of the charm of Gameday over the last 25 years are the weekly picks of the games by Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit (everyone else is window dressing). To be honest, it’s the only part that many fans tune in for given the length and played-out banter throughout the program.
I don’t think we will be holding our breath when Herbstreit makes his pick on September 1.
Kirk Herbstreit on Michigan (from ESPN conference call): "I'm high on Michigan.....between us, I think they’re going to go to South Bend and win."

I think it’s safe to say that despite Michigan’s inability under Jim Harbaugh to win on the road against Top 25 teams, a vast majority of pundits are picking (or are going to pick) the Wolverines to win at Notre Dame.
I’m not surprised by any of this, and as cliché as it sounds, I actually am quite glad that the game is turning into an “us against the world” situation... at home. While there should be zero doubt that Notre Dame is going to show up foaming at the mouth and ready to play Michigan with a high level of physical and mental toughness, it’s these kind of motivations that make the bite that much harder.
Just thought y’all should know.
