Montgomery VanGorder, fan favorite and former Mortell Award finalist (he was robbed) transferred from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the Youngstown State Penguins back in the spring. Monty was looking for a real chance to get some playing time at quarterback, and opted to use his fifth year in search of that despite being the nation’s best holder.
Monty was just named the starting quarterback for Youngstown State in 2018.
Montgomery VanGorder will start at QB for YSU in week 1, head coach Bo Pelini said this afternoon @VindySports— Brian Dzenis (@Brian_Dzenis) August 21, 2018
Montgomery VanGorder is the son of former Notre Dame defensive coordinator, Brian VanGorder (current DC for the Louisville Cardinals). Now he’s going to play (and be the man) for Bo Pelini. Bo’s son, Patrick, is currently a sophomore preferred walk-on at Notre Dame.
It’s a family thing... you wouldn’t understand.
We here at OFD (especially Pat) couldn’t be happier that Monty is getting this opportunity to start at quarterback for one of the great programs of the FCS. While we miss all that he brought to Notre Dame with his skills as a holder, it’s always awesome to see a young man follow through with his dreams.
Hells yeah Monty!
