This Guy Plays Notre Dame Football: #27 Julian Love

Next up is Notre Dame’s Leader in the Secondary

NCAA Football: Notre Dame at Michigan State Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a roster full of players, and we want to talk about all of them. One Foot Down’s player profile series will take a look at every single one of them, and hopefully we all learn a little bit more about these guys, and Notre Dame’s chances for the upcoming 2018 season.

#27 Julian Love

Next up on the list is rising Junior, 2x All-American cornerback, Julian Love. I was fortunate enough to interview Julian last week (longer feature article coming soon) and needless to say, I was incredibly impressed. His on the field presence matches his personality, and he is coming off of a monster season. Julian is a preseason All American Candidate and looks to be a true leader in the secondary, which could to be the best unit in recent memory.

3 Things About Julian Love

  1. Julian attended Nazareth Academy, a Catholic school outside of Chicago. He grew up a Notre Dame fan, and was desperately hoping for an scholarship....He committed on the spot when he got the call.
  2. He led the team in interceptions last year, totaling 3, while returning 2 for touchdowns and coming just short on the third.
  3. Julian’s younger brother, Michael, is a rising Senior who is starting to pick up steam on the recruiting trail-I would not be surprised to see him get a late offer from the Irish.

YouTube Hot Fire

I mentioned this is Houston Griffith’s feature, but Love has one of the better jumps on the ball that I have ever seen. You can tell he works tirelessly not only on his footwork, but also his hand placement while the ball is in the air. He had an astounding 20 pass break ups this year, and it is no accident that he wins nearly every 50/50 ball. For a Sophomore cornerback to have an 8+ minute highlight tape is an incredible feat in and of itself.

Country, Condiment, Or Canon

Identifying the player as either a country, condiment, or member of the Star Wars Canon.

“That is No Orc Horn” -Legolas- Julian Love

I know. Legolas is from Lord of the Rings, but he told me he was a huge LOTR fan (we then became best friends) and that Legolas was his favorite character. There are some striking resemblance from a demeanor and even looks (the picture is photoshopped above) standpoint. Any time the Fellowship is in a pinch, they turn to Legolas and his incredible hand to hand and distance combat skills. He is also almost ALWAYS calm during treacherous situations (except his little fit before Helms Deep). Like Legolas, Julian remains calm when the ball is in the air and when ball carriers are headed his way. He is incredibly reliable and is a courageous leader, having both grace and swag. I also asked him to pick between the 2 swords and the bow, and he wisely chose the bow. (bonus poll below).

If you were Legolas, would you rather only have your bow, or only have your Twin Blades?

2018 Outlook

I have all the confidence in the world in Julian Love heading into 2018. The combination of him, Shaun Crawford, and Tony Pride Jr. brings a dynamic factor the the Notre Dame defense. For the first time since I can remember, we can have 3 guys in lockdown man coverage and have the confidence and time to let our D-line and blitzers get to the quarterback. I think we may see a dip in his production early in the year, but not for the usual reasons. I think teams will consistently throw away from Julian, as he is the type of defender that teams game plan around. However, late in the year he will be the guy on the defense to step up and make the right plays at the right time.
