This Guy Plays Notre Dame Football: #53 Sam Mustipher

Come for the Outlook, Stay for the Photoshops

NCAA Football: Notre Dame Spring Game Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have a roster full of players, and we want to talk about all of them. One Foot Down’s player profile series will take a look at every single one of them, and hopefully we all learn a little bit more about these guys, and Notre Dame’s chances for the upcoming 2018 season.

#53 Sam Mustipher

Next up on the list is 6’4 305 lb offensive lineman from Owing Mills, Md, Sam Mustipher. Mustipher returns to start at center for the Irish for the third straight year. After losing 2 critical pieces of the O-Line to the NFL (pour one out), he looks to be the anchor and lead what has been a dominant group for the Irish. He returns for this 5th year, despite the option of playing in the NFL, and was named a captain by his teammates.

3 Things to Know About Sam Mustipher

  1. Mustipher has played in 34 games in his career, starting 25 of them.
  2. This Spring he was added to the Rimington Trophy Watch list for the second straight year, which is the award given to College Football’s top Center.
  3. Amazingly, he did not give up a sack or quarterback hit in all of 2017. Repeat, not a sack or a hit during the whole year. Brandon Wimbush better be treating this man right!

When asked if he would come back this year, he responded with the quote below. It is so clear how much he cares about Notre Dame and his teammates, something that is great to say, but another to truly mean.

“Without a Doubt”

Country, Condiment, or Canon

Identifying the player as either a country, condiment, or member of the Star Wars Canon.

Spicy Mustard....Spicy Sam Mustifard

I mostly did this because I simply love the name and the pun, but I do think it fits. Mustard is a great addition to many meat carrying breads, and certain brands can pack a punch. He is not that bougie Grey Poupon Spicy Mustard (bonus fire below), but more along the lines of French’s $1.99 Spicy Brown Mustard. It can add kick to your turkey sandwich, be versatile enough to dip pretzels, or be a delicious add on to a brat. It is tasty, sturdy, and honestly the grittiest of all condiments. With that, I present to you....Sam Mustifard

2018 Outlook

Mustifer will start every game this year barring injuries. He is one of the top rated centers in college football and will be critical as both a player and vocal leader. I am excited for him to be a captain as I think he will bring great energy to some of the newcomers on the O-Line and carry on the tradition of excellence by that position group. He will most likely log his 40th and so on games played this year, closing out a great career that will continue on to the NFL.

*I can’t say or think of Grey Poupon without thinking of Wayne’s World. Enjoy.
