David Adams, a sophomore linebacker from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, has decided to hang up his cleats and quit playing football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Adams announced this decision via Twitter, late Tuesday night.

Adams will remain at Notre Dame and use a “medical scholarship.” It’s a common tool used across the country for players that are too injured to continue their athletic careers. The athlete gets the same benefits as if he was still on the team, but the program does not have to count him as part of the NCAA scholarship limit.
David lists a vast number of injuries and problems with his body, and he came to Notre Dame with almost all of those issues. He stated that he played 60 football games in high school — which is just an incredible amount of wear and tear for a human being (especially a linebacker in western Pennsylvania).
This news is certainly not unexpected — in fact most people were expecting some kind of an announcement this summer. Still, it’s a sad moment anytime you watch an athletic career ripped away from a college student because of the toll their body has paid over the short life they have lived.
We wish David all the best as he continues his academic career, and mends his body. Adams had every opportunity to attend a different school when Notre Dame went 4-8 in 2016, but he stuck with the Irish — as we should stick with him.
The departue of Adams from the football team puts the Irish at the 85 man limit for 2018.
