The weekly poll and pipes can’t take a pass on a passer.

Welcome back to another Bagpipe Monday on One Foot Down. Friends, recruiting camps are in full swing all across the country. That means the quarterback competitions are equally heating up. Prospects are eager to line up next to one another to compete and compare their skills. It’s one of those times that college coaches can use wisely as they evaluate and possibly expand their recruiting big boards.

Bagpipe Monday Notre Dame @phillykelly

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are no different in that regard. They are in a peculiar spot at the quarterback position moving forward. All of the quarterback prospects that Notre Dame has offered are now committed elsewhere. The Irish are in hot pursuit of current Wisconsin Badgers commit, Graham Mertz, but given his status — Notre Dame has to look at other options.

Or do they?

Some believe that with Phil Jurkovec starting his career this season, and the commitment of elite QB Drew Pyne in the 2020 class, the Irish could afford to not sign a quarterback in this class.

I’m not sold on that being the case. The Notre Dame staff is still in search of a quarterback in this class, and perhaps with very good reason. If we look at what the Irish could possibly have in 2019, I think it shows why they are still actively looking for more recruits to offer.

  • Ian Book
  • Avery Davis
  • Phil Jurkovec

It’s basically the same setup as what we will have in 2018. That makes me think that in 2019, either Book or Wimbush could be gone, and perhaps Avery Davis will be fully switched to his new offensive position. You’d still want that 3rd quarterback.

2020 could look a lot different.

  • Ian Book
  • Phil Jurkovec
  • Avery Davis
  • Drew Pyne

So, Wimbush is gone and, depending on 2018/2019, Book could be gone too. Avery Davis could be almost completely removed from the quarterback equation, so now it’s just Jurkovec and freshman Pyne.

The last time Notre Dame didn’t sign a quarterback in a class was in Charlie Weis’s last class in 2009. To make up for this, Brian Kelly signed 3 quarterbacks in the 2010 class: Tommy Rees, Andrew Hendrix, and Luke Massa. (FWIW Kelly was just hired in December of 2009, Rees was an early enrollee, and Hendriz got re-recruited by Kelly).

It wasn’t an ideal situation, and it was one that most likely hurt the Irish moving forward. I don’t believe Notre Dame or Brian Kelly wants to be put in that position again.

The Irish still feel fairly good about the Graham Mertz situation, but even if that doesn’t happen, I think they are likely to offer quarterback, Zach Calzada, from Buford Georgia.

Calzada impressed at the Elite 11 finals and already has offers from the Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M Aggies, and Northwestern Wildcats. If not Mertz, perhaps it’s Calzada that comes into the fold.

I’m not sure if there are any clear answers at this point, but I imagine within the next month or so, a better answer (or possible answer) will make itself known.

Until then... enjoy the pipes.
