OFD Podcast: Notre Dame Football And The Weight Of History

Had a thought about Notre Dame football and hit record... sorry y’all.

Notre Dame V Southern California

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish haven’t won a fully recognized national championship in 25 years. That’s a long time for a blue-blood program to to go without claiming that #1 spot at the end of the season. Because of this, Notre Dame fans have become completely immersed in the legend and lore of the Lou Holtz era.

They can’t get enough of it it seems — and I’m done with it. It was just too long ago to constantly keep bringing it up all the time, but it’s understandable given the history of the program post-Holtz.

The weight of Notre Dame history doesn’t just apply to players and coaches — it affects the fans as well. All of the comparisons, and measuring sticks pile on as each season passes, and it gets to be too much. Like, how can there be a future when one foot is always down in the past? For a program like Notre Dame, it will almost always be that way because of that history, but that can change this year.
