Welcome to another Bagpipe Monday on One Foot Down! Friends, certain things happen when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish win a lot of games — and it’s some of the same things that happen when Notre Dame loses a lot of games... Brian Kelly to the NFL rumors.
Yup, it’s RUMORZ SZN.
One of the main sources of the feed for this Brian Kelly rumor mill is longtime Notre Dame superfan, Colin Cowherd. Recently, the Fox host stated that he has heard from several sources that Brian Kelly is looking to make the jump to the NFL. For someone like Cowherd, a person known to make wide sweeping statements supported by his myopic views — it makes total sense.
Hell, if you step back and think about it for a few minutes, it actually does make sense. The problem is that these are the same type of rumors, from the same host, with the same sources that said the exact same thing after the 2016 season. For a guy that talks about the business of sports, he certainly gets swept up in the wake of backdoor “talk” that is nothing more than negotiating leverage.
These rumors are going to happen. Brian Kelly has an agent like every other coach in America, and those agents make money when their client makes money. It takes almost zero work for an agent to drop unsourced rumors about their client looking around in the hopes of a better deal for that client (and himself).
I saw this on Reddit the other day and wanted to share:
You see, it just doesn’t happen that often.
Look, I have no idea if Brian Kelly really want to go to the NFL or not. I tend to believe that he did a few years ago, but after the work he’s put in and the turnaround he engineered at Notre Dame... he will remain in South Bend for the next 2-3 years.
How long will Brian Kelly stay as HC of Notre Dame?

Rumors exist to make deals. This isn’t reinventing the wheel, it’s going to the tire dealer and asking for a set of used tires for your work car. Moving on...
