Notre Dame Hockey Splits Weekend Series With Ohio State

The Irish and Buckeyes each walked away from the weekend 1-1.

Game 1

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team lost their third straight game on Friday night, falling 1-0 to the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes jumped out to the lead early, scoring on their first power play opportunity 8:59 into the first period. The Irish turned up the pressure in the second period, outshooting the Buckeyes 12-10, and continued the pressure in the third, holding an 8-2 advantage in shots, but it wasn’t enough as they couldn’t get one into the net.

Scoring

OSU - Mason Jobst (4) on the PP at 8:59 of the 1st, assisted by Wyatt Ege and Gustaf Westlund.

Goalies

ND - Cale Morris stopped 22 of 23 shots in the loss.

OSU - Sean Romeo stopped all 23 shots for the shutout and win.

Penalties

OSU - Mason Jobst, 2 for tripping at 0:33 in the 1st.

ND - Dylan Malmquist, 2 for cross-checking at 0:33 in the 1st.

ND - Mike O’Leary, 2 for roughing at 8:32 in the 1st.

ND - Matt Steeves, 2 for high sticking at 13:42 in the 1st.

OSU - Dakota Joshua, 2 for charging at 1:14 in the 2nd.

ND - Cam Morrison, 2 for elbowing at 17:21 in the 2nd.

Game 2

The first period of game 2 was a fairly even affair, as the two teams went into the locker rooms tied 0-0 after the first twenty minutes. A flurry of chances for Ohio State in the final few minutes tested that scoreline, but Notre Dame goalie Cale Morris proved up to the task.

Ohio State opened the scoring in the second period, when Mason Jobst scored after a series of Buckeyes passes in the offensive zone. Colin Theisen tied the game for Notre Dame later in the second when he slotted home a one time feed from Cam Morrison from the left circle.

The third period was tightly contested with both teams having chances to take the lead. The Irish finally broke through on a goal from Joe Wegwerth that would prove to be the game winner. The win was the 300th win with Notre Dame for head coach Jeff Jackson.

OSU - Mason Jobst (5) at 3:25 in the 2nd, assisted by Carson Meyer and Freddy Gerard.

ND - Colin Theisen (3) at 11:58 in the 2nd, assisted by Jake Pivonka and Cam Morrison.

ND - Jow Wegworth (5) at 13:48 in the 3rd, unassisted.

Goalies

ND - Cale Morris saved 38 of 39 shots for the win.

OSU - Tommy Nappier saved 36 of 38 shots for the loss.

Penalties

OSU - Sasha Larocque, 2 for interference at 0:24 in the 1st.

ND - BENCH, 2 for too many players at 5:40 in the 1st.

OSU - Dakota Joshua, 2 for interference at 7:03 in the 2nd.

ND - Tory Dello, 2 for boarding at 9:21 in the 2nd.

OSU - Sasha Larocque, 2 for checking from behind at 15:24 in the 2nd.

The Irish continue their Big Ten schedule and head to Ann Arbor for games Friday and Saturday against the Michigan Wolverines.
