The #6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team traveled to Ann Arbor over the weekend, where they took on the #14 Michigan Wolverines in a matchup of Big Ten rivals. The Irish struggled to find the back of the net in game one on Friday, falling 2-1, before an offensive onslaught saw them come away with a 6-2 win Saturday. Here’s how it happened.
Game 1
After a quiet first period, Notre Dame jumped out to the lead early in the second period. Matt Hellickson intercepted a pass at the defensive blue line before carrying through the neutral zone and dropping off a pass to Dylan Malmquist. Malmquist returned the pass and Hellickson, who slotted it past Strauss Mann for his first goal of the season.

The Wolverines answered right back though, scoring two power play goals in the second period. Neither team was able to score in the third.
One of the most worrying statistics on the day has become somewhat of a trend for the Irish, especially in their losses, as the were outshot by Michigan 38-27. Of course you still have to score the goals, but simple probability says the more shots you take the more goals you are likely to score, and the Irish have been outshot often early in the season, relying on Cale Morris to make the stops and keep them competitive.

UM - Joseph Cecconi, 2 for tripping at 13:42 in the 3rd.

Game 2
Michigan scored first in game 2, going up 1-0 on a power play goal by Will Lockwood just 2:47 into the game. Dylan St. Cyr was able to keep the Wolverines off the board for the remainder of the period before Alex Steeves and Cal Burke scored 1:37 apart at the end of the period to give Notre Dame a 2-1 lead.
Notre Dame opened the second period on a tear, scoring three goals in the first 4:10 of the period. They scored again with just 2:23 remaining in the second for a 6-1 lead. Michigan added a goal in the third for a final score of 6-2.
Despite the flurry of goals, Notre Dame had just 23 shots, again being outshot by Michigan who had 31. If not for some stellar goaltending from St. Cyr this game may have ended differently.
Highlights from our 6️⃣-2️⃣ road win over Michigan!
