Podcast: Talking Notre Dame-Northwestern & The Shillelagh Trophy

I’m on the Radio.com Notre Dame Pregame Show to talk about a forgotten rivalry trophy.

I was Nick Shepkowski’s guest Tuesday on the Radio.com Notre Dame Preview Show, where we discussed topics related to Saturday’s tilt between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Northwestern Wildcats.

Shepkowski, a voice on Chicago’s 670 AM “The Score,” and I talked extensively about the forgotten Shillelagh trophy that these two teams used to battle for, as well as the Omaha, Neb. businessman who now owns the once-discarded hardware.

We also discussed whether it made sense for Notre Dame and Northwestern to re-ignite their dormant rivalry with more regular schedule appearances.

Shepkowski’s pregame show runs 59 minutes and includes a recap of the Irish’s win over the Navy Midshipmen, a preview of Saturday’s game and an interview with the Chicago Tribune’s Teddy Greenstein. The interview with me starts around 42 minutes and is about 10 minutes long.

Check it out here. You can follow Nick on Twitter here. Shep is a Notre Dame fan desperate to reclaim bragging rights within his own household. His wife is a Northwestern fan and the two were present at Notre Dame Stadium for Notre Dame’s harrowing 43-40 overtime loss to the Wildcats in 2014.
