The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team lost its first game in 87 days as they fell to the no. 18 Wisconsin Badgers Sunday afternoon at the United Center by a score of 5-0. The loss snaps Notre Dame’s school record win streak at 16 games.

The Badgers (12-12-3, 6-8-2-0 B1G) jumped on the Irish (19-4-1, 13-1-0-0 B1G) early, opening the scoring at 15:07 of the 1st period and never looked back. Wisconsin added short-handed and power-play goals in the 2nd period and two goals in the final minute of the game to finish off the 5-0 victory over No. 1. Despite the scoreline, Notre Dame goaltender Cale Morris continued his stellar season, stopping 41 shots, but it wasn’t enough as the Irish were held off the scoresheet completely. The Irish were not without their chances though, going 0-for-5 on the power-play throughout the game.

The Irish win streak was the longest in school history, snapping the previous long streak of 15 games during the 1983-84 season, it was also the longest streak in the NCAA this season. The loss was Notre Dame’s first away from home this season and their first in Big Ten Conference play, becoming the first B1G team ever to win their first 13 conference games of the season.
