Kevin Austin, a four-star wide receiver from Pompano Beach, Florida, committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish today. Austin chose the Irish over a long list of power schools in the south, including the Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators, Tennessee Volunteers and Clemson Tigers.
However... it was the Duke Blue Devils that have been the biggest competition with 6'3" 200 pound Austin.
Austin is seeking the best possible combination of academics and athletics, and Duke and Notre Dame have been on the top of his list in both regards.
There is a small caveat with todays decision: he will still take his official visits. This means a school like Duke will get their shot to win Austin over. It's like Lou Holtz used to always say: a verbal commitment means you lead for the player. So, this one isn't exactly done if all of that continues to be the case.
Austin is the 16th commitment in the 2018 class for the Irish, and the second wide receiver, with the other being Micah Jones. The Irish are still considered to be in play for several other wide receivers, including five-star Amon-Ra St. Brown.
