Notre Dame Football: Former Safety Spencer Perry Lands at South Alabama

U-S-A! U-S-A! (Get it?)

NCAA Football: Arizona Bowl-South Alabama vs Air Force Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish safety Spencer Perry, who announced his transfer in April, will attend the University of South Alabama.

Perry, from Newnan, Ga., played in six games during his freshman year, but exclusively on special teams. He did not record a tackle on special teams and logged zero snaps on defense.

While Perry didn’t explicitly say he’d play football for the South Alabama Jaguars, the 6-foot-2, 205 pound athlete did mention in April that he was “electing to transfer and continue my educational goals and football career elsewhere.”

If the former IMG Academy product joins the team, he’ll have to sit out the entirety of the 2017 season because of NCAA transfer rules. The Jaguars play in the Sun Belt Conference, and have been an Football Bowl Subdivision member since 2012. They are 25-38 in FBS play, but did beat the Southeastern Conference’s Mississippi St. Bulldogs to open last season.

The former three-star athlete held offers coming out of high school from the Florida Gators, Auburn Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes, among others.

The Irish have added Alohi Gilman, a sophomore transfer who previously played for the Navy Midshipmen, and true freshman Jordan Genmark Heath and Isaiah Robertson to the safety depth chart since Perry’s departure.

I had a great tweet lined up for the first time Perry broke up a pass (bonus if he did the shh gesture afterward):

Bat it down now
Spencer Perry

I’ll definitely use it if I see Perry in a South Alabama game. But, for Sun Belt games, I might have to wait ’Til Tuesday.
