Welcome back to Bagpipe Monday on One Foot Down! We’re just crawling out of a post-vacation slump, and just trying to maintain.
Don’t judge me.
June is long gone, and July inches us closer and closer to real college football news and discussion. For fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, it forces us to start asking the tough questions:
- Did Brian Kelly make the right moves in the offseason?
- Is Brandon Wimbush ready to be QB 1?
- How much can the defense improve?
- Will the ribbon boards and jumbotron cause group heart attacks?
Those are just a small handful of the questions we are all throwing against the wall. For me, the most pressing issue is that Notre Dame defense.
When Brian Kelly first came to Notre Dame, he spoke about “manufacturing points” on offense. For all of his faults, he has been mostly right in that regard. In fact, the most important question every year IS about the defense (once you get past all the quarterback competition smoke and mirrors).
Some analysts have been reserved in their thoughts about the Irish defense in 2017. They point out that although Mike Elko has developed really solid units for the Bowling Green Falcons and Wake Forest Demon Deacons, it typically took a few years to really get dialed in, and the first year could be rough.
I don’t believe for one second that the Irish can win more than 7 games this season if the defense is giving up more than 21 points a game. This thought is causing a little (or more than a little) anxiety when thinking about the upcoming season.
When a nurse takes your vitals, they ask you to list your pain on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the worst pain ever. I think that’s what we are going to do today (or tonight to keep it real).
What is your anxiety level when it comes to the Irish defense in 2017? 1 being "super confident" and 10 being "binge-drinking bleach"?
