Former Notre Dame superstar, 1st round pick, and Super Bowl champion Michael Floyd has been sentenced to one day in jail for violating the rules of his house arrest by failing an alcohol test. Floyd says the reason for this failed test is because of drinking kombucha tea, which many say is a healthy beverage. According to Brent Bauer, M.D. from the Mayo Clinic, kombucha tea contains tea, sugar, bacteria, and yeast (And in Floyd's case, alcohol). Proponents claim the tea has health benefits including stimulating the immune system, prevents cancer, and helps with digestion and liver function.
The house arrest stems from last December's DUI arrest in Arizona while Floyd was still a member of the Arizona Cardinals, which had footage of him asleep at the wheel in front of a traffic light. Floyd would later be released by the Cardinals, but would later be signed to the New England Patriots leading to a Super Bowl victory in a historic battle against the Atlanta Falcons. After not signing with the Patriots, Floyd was signed to his hometown team the Minnesota Vikings to help either Teddy Bridgewater or Sam Bradford after a disappointing 2016 season.
Vikings chief operating officer Kevin Warren wrote a letter supporting Michael Floyd in his defense and sent it to Floyd's lawyer, Robert Feinberg. Floyd pleaded in a statement that he had no knowledge that the kombucha tea's had alcohol while drinking several bottles and watching a movie in his home. According to The Pioneer Press, Floyd said that the Vikings advocate that their players drink the tea and said that the team has it "on tap" at the team's facility. Reported by ESPN, Kevin Warren wrote in his letter that kombucha tea is "utilized by many professional athletes as a probiotic and is available at our facility on a daily basis." Warren also defended Floyd's character by saying he has a strong work ethic along with a compliant attitude and professionalism.
As Floyd serves his one day jail sentence we hope our former beloved superstar learns from these actions and leave this part of his life behind him. The Vikings should look to contend for the playoffs once again after signing Michael Floyd and adding to their receiving corps which suffered in the 2016 season that saw 2016 1st round pick Laquon Treadwell record only one catch for 15 yards in the whole season and lose former 1st rd pick and return man Cordarelle Paterson to the Oakland Raiders, but saw promise from the speedy Stefon Diggs. The Vikings will rely heavy on their receiving corps as they continue to watch Teddy Bridewater recover from his devastating injury a year ago and lose future Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson to the New Orleans Saints.
