Bagpipe Monday: Notre Dame Freshmen Arrive For Duty

All theose guys you got excited for in February, are finally here in June.

There is always a big rush of excitement when National Signing Day comes for fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Every winter, we put our hopes and dreams of future success in the hands of 18-25 kids that haven’t even graduated high school yet.

It’s a bit unfair, but at the same time, it’s exactly how this world of college football is nowadays. We make it that way because we sell that to these kids, and they make it that way because they and their parents buy it in bulk.

With all that hype, we constantly have to remind ourselves that these are very young adults that are about to enter the real world for the first time (well, kind of the real world- this is college). Perhaps you can remember looking back on your first days or weeks as a college student. Remember the excitement, and the uncertainty?

Now, imagine all of that with a added amount of expectation to help one of history’s greatest athletic programs. How would you handle the emotion, the expectations, and the load?

Probably not as well as these guys I’m betting- but everyone handles it differently.

This is when star rankings go completely in the trash and everyone starts fresh. What can you ass to the team, program, and university? What will your role become in 2017? Can you handle that role? What do I do in DeBartolo Hall?

There is a lot of stuff going on for these guys. Hopefully, they can soldier on and do their duty.
