Notre Dame Football Recruiting: News And Notes For Irish Invasion

There’s stuff we know, stuff we don’t, and stuff that we’d rather just be stuffed in a box and be vaporized when it comes to Notre Dame football recruiting.

The biggest recruiting weekend for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish starts today. The roster has been extremely active and fluid over the past few weeks with transfers in, transfers out, commitments, a decommitment, and perhaps a grad transfer coming back home.

So let’s dive in to a bit of everything (for the 2018 class).

The Commits

Notre Dame will have a healthy amount of commitments that will be attending the Irish Invasion.

  • 4 Star RB Markese Stepp
  • 4 Star DT Jayson Ademilola
  • 3 Star DE Justin Ademilola
  • 4 Star LB Matt “Bo” Bauer
  • 4 Star QB Phil Jurkovec
  • 4 Star DB Derrik Allen

Not only is this just good business to keep as much talent close at hand, but it also helps the recruiting process with those uncommitted prospects that may just need a few gentle nudges in the right direction.

The Top Prospects

Now, these are the most interesting names for those targets that Notre Dame is really going after for the 2018 class. These prospects are all expected to show up to the Irish Invasion this weekend:

  • 4 Star RV Shayne Simon
  • 3 Star DE Jayson Oweh
  • 4 Star CB DJ Johnson
  • 4 Star LB Cam McGrone
  • 4 Star TE George Takacs

All five of these players are leaning towards the Irish, and with the exception of Oweh, they are on HASHTAG COMMIT WATCH. If I had to rank them in order of most likely to commit over the weekend, it would look like this:

  1. Shayne Simon
  2. George Takacs
  3. Cam McGrone
  4. DJ Johnson
  5. Jayson Oweh

It’s all still very much in the air, but I imagine this weekend will prove to be a very nice one for the Irish.

What’s Up With Thomas Booker?

With all of this (possible) good news on the horizon, the 2018 Notre Dame football recruiting effort took a bit of a blow this week.

4 Star defensive end, Thomas Booker, is one of the top targets on the board for the Fighting Irish, and up until Friday, we could have penciled Notre Dame in as his leader. However... Stanford is his number one school, and Booker has been waiting on the Stanford Cardinal to finally offer him. He spent a month out in Palo Alto last summer, and basically- this offer changes everything.

While you would like to think that Notre Dame is still sitting in good shape with all the “love” and attention, we have seen this Stanford story before.

More Backburner?

This weekend could have been when Notre Dame offered 3 star safety Paul Moala from Mishawaka. However... the recent signing of Navy Midshipmen transfer, Alohi Gilman may put a hold on that even longer. I’m not saying that Moala won’t ever receive an offer, but it may take more dominoes to fall- which sounds more like a December / January time frame.

Other Names?

Just because a prospect isn’t coming to Irish Invasion this weekend- it doesn’t mean they are low on the totem pole. Here are more OFFERED names to keep an eye on in the coming months:

  • 3 Star RB Jahmir Smith
  • 5 Star WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
  • 4 Star WR Chase Cota
  • 4 Star WR Kevin Austin
  • 4 Star TE Jeremy Ruckert
  • 3 Star TE Tommy Tremble
  • 4 Star OT Nicholas Petit-Frere
  • 4 Star LB Jack Lamb
  • 4 Star CB Houston Griffith
  • 4 Star CB Kalon Gervin (lol)
  • 3 Star CB Donte Burton
  • 3 Star DB Nasir Peoples
  • 3 Star ATH Tariq Bracy

It’s okay if you don’t want to keep up. It’s June- and that’s what we are here for.

Wait And See

Most good news (commit type news) probably won’t come out until Sunday night, so we have a few days to mull this all over. Once the weekend is done, we should have a much clearer picture on how this class will look for official visit season in the fall.
