46 Years Ago Today: Digger Phelps To Notre Dame

On May 4, 1971, then 29-year-old Richard "Digger" Phelps was named the new head coach of the Notre Dame men's basketball team.

"His family's future happiness was paramount, Phelps told me," Fordham University athletic director Pete Carlesimo told the Associated Press. "When the position at Notre Dame came open, he applied. As long as a year ago, he had told us that his ambition had always been to coach at Notre Dame."
