Notre Dame Football: NFL Draft Analysts Think DeShone Kizer Cost Himself $3 Millon at Combine

Post-combine mock drafts have been unkind to the former Notre Dame quarterback

NFL draft analysts were not impressed with DeShone Kizer’s NFL Combine performance, if their mock drafts are any indication.

The former Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback’s median position in the 27 mock drafts released in the week before his tryout was No. 13 to the Arizona Cardinals. Over the Cap estimates that contract to be worth $13.4 million.

In the 38 mocks released since Saturday, Kizer’s median position is No. 25 to the Houston Texans. That contract is worth $10.2 million, according to the same site.

The mocks I examined include everyone from professional insiders to amateur bloggers, which gives a good sense of the hivemind 49 days before the draft commences in Philadelphia. Kizer is expected to participate in Notre Dame’s March 23 Pro Day and countless other private workouts with NFL teams, which will undoubtedly affect his standing.

Kizer “blew the doors off” his interview with the San Francisco 49ers, according to their general manager John Lynch. That prompted SB Nation’s Dan Kadar to push Kizer up on his board from the No. 3 pick owned by the Chicago Bears. FanRag Sport’s Kyle Crabbs jumped Kizer from No. 25 to No. 2 and acknowledged Lynch’s comments weighed heavily in the switch.

If that was an overreaction in Kizer’s favor, the DraftTek staff may have offered the inverse. The group has never been particularly high on the former signalcaller in South Bend, putting him anywhere from No. 27 to the Kansas City Chiefs to a high second round pick of the Cleveland Browns or 49ers.

In their mock released Wednesday, DraftTek had the Houston Texans selecting Kizer...in the third round. At pick No. 89, Kizer - who is still the top quarterback on Mike Mayock’s big board - was two selections ahead of Pittsburgh’s Nate Peterman.

The Draft Wire’s Cole Thompson perspective on Kizer was obviously affected by the Combine. He had Kizer at No. 2 before workouts Saturday and dropped him to No. 27 in an updated mock released Tuesday.

We’re now tracking 95 analysts who have published at least one mock draft since Jan. 10. Here’s the breakdown of where they see Kizer headed.
