Now that Christmas is behind us, we can really start to look towards the new year and the Citrus Bowl between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the LSU Tigers. 2017 has been a season of exceeding expectations for the Irish while it has been a season of living up to expectations for the Tigers.
After a 4-8 2016, the national media didn't think much of Notre Dame's chances this season and they started the season unranked. After a one point loss to the Georgia Bulldogs at home, a lot of Irish fans didn't think much of the upcoming season as well. But, with the Irish going on a 7 game winning streak that saw them win by an average of 43-18... things were looking spectacular.
Three of those wins were blowouts against the Michigan State Spartans, USC Trojans, and N.C. State Wolfpack. Notre Dame reached #3 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Of course, blowouts against the Miami-Florida Hurricanes and the Stanford Cardinal killed most of the good vibes from the season, at 9-3 with a chance for 10 wins... the Irish are on the high side of some of the more optimistic season predictions.
LSU started the season ranked in the top 15, but with September losses to the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Troy Trojans, there was a lot of angst and uncertainty in Baton Rouge. An upset win over the Auburn Tigers and finishing on a three game win streak to finish 9-3 has LSU pretty much right where they started.
Would a Citrus Bowl win make this a successful season for either school? What would a win or loss mean for 2018?
