The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been looking for an elite level safety for what seems like an eternity, and now that 4 Star safety Derrik Allen has signed his letter of intent, they got one.
Allen is from Marietta, Georgia and is one of the highest rated recruits in this class. He’s incredibly physical, and can play the run as well as any defensive back in the country. He also has really nice ball skills and will be able to play the pass well with a combination of skill and an excellent sense of reading what the offense and the quarterback is trying to do.
Putting the to paper, making it official. @DsmoothAllen will be electric in the Irish backfield. #GoIrish ☘ #IrishBouND18 pic.twitter.com/5pyvGcOVtI

While there is always fun talk about freshman possibly starting, there are reasonable theories that place Allen in a starting role in 2018 at some point in the season. Those are lofty expectations to be sure, but it also speaks to Notre Dame’s absolute need at the position.
Allen was a hot item on the recruiting trail and living deep in SEC territory, he had offers from all over the place including the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, and Clemson Tigers (need I go on?).
