The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got another Butkus Award finalist to sign when Matthew “Bo” Bauer sent his letter of intent to play in South Bend. Bauer had an incredible senior year, and an incredible career at Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The Irish wanted to add a bunch of talent to its linebacker group this cycle, and Bauer was one of a few homeruns that this staff was able to get committed, and then close with a signature for the early signing period.
This guy is a WINNER! @BoBauer27 has been waiting for nearly two years to join @Coach_Lea's LB core.#GoIrish ☘ #IrishBouND18 pic.twitter.com/LLbiVtFtaS

Bauer has that football I.Q. that you like to see in a linebacker, and his instincts are top-notch. He plays the run well, and is a great tackler. He could do a bit better against the pass, but with some coaching, his athleticism will allow him to grow in that regard.
Bauer has been committed since the summer of 2016. He went through a horrific season for the Irish, as well as the coaching upheaval at the end of that season - and still remained a part of this class.
He wants to be Irish and he passed up offers from the Michigan State Spartans, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Pittsburgh Panthers. He will enroll early at Notre Dame and will try to get in the mix right away.
