We are getting closer and closer to the start of the early signing period, and the first National Signing Day victory laps for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With twenty commitments in the fold and expected to sign on Wednesday, fans should be really excited as the Irish are currently ranked #6 in the team rankings according to the 247 Composite.
There are 2-3 targets right now that could end up committing to Notre Dame and signing their letter of intent to play for the Irish before the early signing period is up on December 22. Most recruiting junkies already know about the three names, but let’s go ahead and talk about them for just a minute.
4 STAR SAFETY, JULIUS IRVIN
Fans could know as early as today what school Irvin plans on signing with during the early period. The 247 Crystal Balls started flowing in for Irvin to commit to Notre Dame. Julius Irvin is a four star safety from Servite High School in California, and would be an enormous pick-up for the Irish in the USC Trojans neck of the woods.
The word is that USC has done a poor job of recruiting Irivin, and now the Irish are primed to reap the rewards of diligent recruiting from the Notre Dame staff.
4 STAR CORNERBACK, KYLER GORDON
Getting a handle on Gordon’s possible decision is much harder than Irvin’s at the moment. Let’s put it in simple terms here:
- Gordon, from Washington state, wasn’t sure about leaving the west coast.
- Was blown away on a visit to Notre Dame.
- Visited the Washington Huskies and started leaning that way.
- The Notre Dame staff is hounding Gordon.
- Gordon is most likely torn.
- No one knows what he is going to do.
It might be 50/50 for the talented cornerback, but we expect a decision and a signature to a school during the early signing period.
4 STAR WIDE RECEIVER BRADEN LENZY
This one might be a little more clear cut than the other two (or a lot more). Lenzy, if you remember, was a Notre Dame commit at one point, but decommitted from the Irish and pledged his services to the Oregon Ducks. A bit of coaching upheaval lit a fire for Lenzy, and he dropped his commitment to the Ducks.
Now that all of that is out of the way - everyone expects Lenzy to commit and sign with the Irish on Friday, the 22nd. A lot could still happen in that short time, but this is about as solid of a possibility as you’re going to find in recruiting.
WHAT ARE THE IRISH LOOKING LIKE NATIONALLY?
With the 6th ranked class right now, we can use the 247 Calculator to predict / measure things.
- If Notre Dame lands all three, it would bump them up to the 5th ranked class with 270 points.
- If Notre Dame only lands Irvin and Lenzy, they bump up to 5th with 266 points.
- Both the 266 and 270 would have been good enough for 8th last year.
Now, of course other schools will get new commitments too, but this shows that the Irish are still locked in for a top 10 class. With another signing day still coming up in February (good old faithful) we can expect more movement in those rankings. Notre Dame will be in on a few prospects for that day, and perhaps they shock the world with a few.
Notre Dame fans are really used to signing day wins, but with the early signing period, they really are lined up for a HUGE win with two or three of the aforementioned recruits.
HOLD ON TIGHT!
